2019 Woestkloof Syrah, Wellington – South Africa
16,80 €
Winemaker Simon Obholzer personally selects the most suitable barriques for this wine. The result reflects the great potential of the geologically ancient top locations of Woestkloof (“Wild Gorge”): Complex, profound nose with peppery-berry spiciness, powerful attack on the palate, expansive, intense fruit with a velvety finish. Owner’s signature dish.

Woestkloof
Wellington’s boutique winery
In 2021, South Africa’s most renowned wine guide, Platter, caused a sensation:
The rather conservative publication, in which newcomers usually have a hard time, rated the first Woestkloof year with 4.5 out of a maximum of 5 *****.
The current area under vines in the “Woestkloof” (translated: wild valley) is a total of 4.5 hectares, whose geohistorically ancient soils in Wellington are among the most valuable in South Africa. Winegrower Simon Obholzer has made it his task to make brilliant use of this steep template of nature. In the past, the Woestkloof grapes served as coveted blending partners to upgrade the expensive premium cuvées of the large South African wineries. Today, Simon Obholzer personally selects the most suitable barriques for the Owner’s Blend wines in order to create small, unmistakable masterpieces. But he learned from the best: his teachers included the late Piedmontese wine legend Beppe Rinaldi, as well as Marchese Mario Inciso della Rocchetta from Sassicaia and South Africa’s cult winemaker Hansi Innerhofer from the Capelands winery in Somerset West. A small drop of bitterness: Due to the high quality standards and the exclusive use of our own grapes (in South Africa the exception rather than the rule), the quantities are quite limited.
